Fern is a 6yr old standard smooth haired dachshund, she is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, flea and worm treated and has also had a dental with us. She will be rehomed with 5 weeks free pet insurance.

Fern came to us from the stray pound several weeks ago, she had been bred from multiple times and was severely underweight, in terrible condition with leathery ears and bald patches but worst of all when she was found she was in a state of collapse and was severely dehydrated, goodness knows what sort of life this poor girl had endured.  During her time in the pound she was stumbling around and struggling to walk, she was given steroids but no pain relief sadly and we just knew we needed to help her as no one else was stepping up for her.

On arrival with us we immediately got her onto some pain relief and she underwent xrays which showed some changes to some of the vertabrae and discs at the top of her spine in her neck area as we had suspected. We immediately had her referred to our neuro specialists who carried out an thorough examination and she underwent an MRI. It was concluded that whilst she was clearly in some discomfort at that time, the pain relief had really helped and although there was a surgical option it was considered high risk and not immediately necessary, the neurologiest felt that with medication and a period of VERY strict cage rest, that she could do well and resolve this on her own so thats what we have done.  After many weeks of being closely managed by her brilliant foster mum, being given strict rest Fern has made a remarkable recovery and is doing brilliantly. She is now off all her medication and will just be kept on good Joint Suppliments and possibly Golden Turmeric paste long term to support her ongoing wellbeing.

Fern is SUCH a beautiful soul, she is so super sweet and gentle, she loves everyone she meets. She is a really kind little dog who deserves the very best of homes where she can treated like a princess.

Fern will suit an experienced Daxi home or a home where you can demonstrate that you understand the care she will need going forward to protect her back, the breed are prone to these conditions due to their long bodies (another poor effect of breeding). She must not be allowed to run up and down stairs or jump from great heights, doggy steps onto the sofa etc will be great for her.

Fern is now able to have short walks onlead still (not offlead at the moment), she is quite nervous on the lead and will often freeze and lay down if she is unsure or if its a busy area so she will need a home where there is access to nice quiet, more rural walks without lots of traffic and noise.

She needs a home with a nice enclosed garden without lots of steps, she absolutely loves other dogs and can happily live with another neutered friendly small dog who will be gentle with her. She hasnt met cats with us but she can be rehomed with gentle respectful children aged 6yrs and over who wont try and pull her around.

Fern is housetrained, enjoys her food and takes treats nicely, she sleeps downstairs quietly at night and is ok being left for a few hours in the day, she has no seperation anxiety nor any possession issues with food or toys.  She is great with the vets and travels ok in the car, she does need to be lifted in and out of a vehicle.

Fern is such a happy girl now, she loves helping in the garden with a bit of gardening and, as with most daxi's can be a little vocal at times when playing, they do love the sound of their own voices :)

Being fostered in Swadlincote but can be rehomed further afield to the right home subject to homecheck and an adoption donation of £300
